OUR 1966 PRO STREET CHEVELLE


THOUGH IT WAS SOLD IN 1995 OUR CHEVELLE WILL ALWAYS BE A FOND MEMORY. IT WAS BOUGHT IN 1976 FOR $350 AS A DAILY DRIVER AND EVENTUALLY OVER THE ALMOST 20 YEARS WE OWNED IT EVOLVED INTO ONE OF THE NICEST PRO STREET CARS IN THE NEW ENGLAND AREA. THIS WEB PAGE IS SORT OF A TRIBUTE TO THE CAR THAT BROUGHT ME A LOT OF JOY, GRIEF, EGO BOOST, DESPAIR, AWARDS, TROPHIES AND MAGAZINE FEATURES!

THIS IS THE EARLIEST PHOTO I STILL HAVE OF THE CHEVELLE. THIS WAS TAKEN IN 1976. COOL HOOD SCOOP, NOTICE THE UP IN THE AIR STANCE! THIS WAS THE START OF SOMETHING BIG, LITTLE DID I KNOW WHAT WAS IN STORE FOR THIS CAR IN THE YEARS TO COME! WHILE A LITTLE CRUDE IN THE BEGINNING I LEARNED A LOT WHILE WORKING ON IT AND FINALLY GOT IT RIGHT IN THE END!

MOTOR COMPARTMENT IN 1978. PUT ALL SS EMBLEMS ON THE CAR BUT IT STILL HAD A 327 SMALL BLOCK WITH A MUNCIE M21 4 SPEED, ALSO LOWERED THE SUSPENSION, DROVE IT OUT TO THE 1979 STREET MACHINE NATIONALS AND IT WAS SHOT FOR CAR CRAFT MAGAZINE AND WAS EVENTUALLY FEATURED!

NEW PAINT JOB AND VINYL TOP REALLY MADE A DIFFERENCE! WAS STILL A DAILY DRIVER CAR AT THIS POINT. WASN'T CRAZY ABOUT THE VINYL TOP AFTER A WHILE SO IT WAS TAKEN OFF AND THE ROOF WAS PAINTED TO MATCH THE REST OF THE CAR. THE COLOR WAS HONDURAS MAROON AND WAS DONE IN ENAMEL. AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS I STRIPPED IT DOWN AND HAD IT REDONE IN LACQUER.

DECIDED TO PUT A BIG BLOCK 427 WITH A TUNNEL RAM IN ALONG WITH A NEW PAINT JOB AND DOUG NASH 5 SPEED, WAS FEATURED IN MANY CAR MAGAZINES IN THIS VERSION, INCLUDING CAR CRAFT, AUTO BUFF, HOT ROD, SUPER CHEVY, POPULAR HOT RODDING AND OTHERS!

RACING AT THE STREET MACHINE NATIONALS EAST AT ENGLISHTOWN, NJ IN 1987. THIS WAS BEFORE THE CHEVELLE WAS PRO STREETED. NOTICE WHAT KIND OF CAR I WAS RACING; A BRAND NEW GRAND NATIONAL! LITTLE DID I KNOW I WOULD OWN ONE 8 YEARS LATER! I REMEMBER HOW MY FRIENDS AND I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW THESE NEW CARS WITH A MEASLY V-6 WERE KICKING OUR TAILS IN OUR MIGHTY MUSCLE CARS OF THE 60'S AND 70'S!

REALLY BIT THE BULLET IN THIS VERSION OF THE CHEVELLE! PRO STREETED IT IN 1990 WITH A SUPERCHARGED 454, SAME TRANSMISSION AND A FORD 9" REAR, CHANGED THE COLOR TO FORD GRABBER BLUE.

THIS WAS THE LAST PHOTO TAKEN OF THE CHEVELLE WHILE WE STILL OWNED IT. WE HAD JUST WON A TROPHY AT THE ADIRONDAK NATIONALS IN LAKE GEORGE, NY AND SOLD IT THE NEXT WEEK!

TRUNK FEATURED A 12 GALLON FUEL CELL AND REAR MOUNTED BATTERY AND WAS FULLY CARPETED

AFTER THE CHEVELLE WAS PRO STREETED IT APPEARED IN HOT ROD, SUPER CHEVY (ON THE COVER!) AND A COUPLE OF OTHER MAGAZINES. THIS PHOTO APPEARED IN A FEATURE IN CHEVY ACTION MAGAZINE BACK IN JANUARY 1992!

CLOSE UP OF THE VERY SUBTLE GRAPHICS ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR

I MADE ONE PASS AT THE STRIP WITH THE CHEVELLE AFTER IT WAS PRO STREETED AT MAPLE GROVE RACEWAY IN PENNSYLVANIA AT THE POPULAR HOT RODDING SHOW. RAN A 12.73 AT 118 MPH WHILE SPINNING THE TIRES IN THE FIRST THREE GEARS!

THIS IS HOW THE CHEVELLE APPEARS TODAY, IT WAS SOLD AGAIN AND THE NEW OWNER IS TRYING TO PUT IT BACK TO IT'S FORMER GLORY! THE GUYS I SOLD IT TO WENT CRAZY WITH THE GRAPHICS, CHANGED THE WHEELS AND OTHER THINGS I AM NOT CRAZY ABOUT BUT IT IS NOT OUR CAR ANYMORE SO THAT IS THE WAY IT GOES. THE NEW OWNER IS BUILDING A NEW BLOWN 427 FOR IT AND HOPEFULLY I WILL SEE THE CHEVELLE AGAIN WHEN HE FINISHES IT!

HERE'S A RECENT PHOTO FROM THE NEW OWNER! THIS WAS TAKEN DURING THE FALL OF 1999 WITH THE NEW SUPERCHARGED 427 BIG BLOCK HE HAD BUILT! THE GUY THAT BOUGHT IT FROM ME TOOK OUT THE 454 TO INCREASE IT'S POWER (LIKE IT REALLY NEEDED IT!) HE THEN SOLD THE CHEVELLE TO THE CURRENT OWNER WITHOUT THE MOTOR DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES! I JUST RECENTLY HEARD FROM THE NEW OWNER IN APRIL 2000 AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE NEW MOTOR HE HAD BUILT WASTED IT'S CAM ON ITS MAIDEN VOYAGE. THE CHEVELLE HAS BEEN SOLD AGAIN AND I HAVE LOST CONTACT WITH THE NEW OWNER SO WHO KNOWS WHERE IT IS AT THIS POINT!?

THE CHEVELLE APPEARED IN AN AD FOR B&M SUPERCHARGERS! SURE WISH WE STILL HAD IT! BUT WE DO LOVE OUR GN! OUR CHEVELLE WAS ON THE COVER OF THE MAY 1994 ISSUE
  OF SUPER CHEVY MAGAZINE AND WAS FEATURED IN THE CENTERFOLD!
