We
thought you might like to know about the various types of materials our products
are made of. |
"2-PLEX"
The "2-plex" is a 2-color lamintated
plexiglas, 1/8 thick. It's basically a thick piece
of clear plexiglass with a .012" thick layer of colored opaque plexiglass
laminated to it. It is reverse-engraved thru the thin black layer and into the clear, after which you
paint the engraving! The result is full-color "inlayed" engraving, totally smooth on the
top surface! This is used for dashboard overlays, console overlays, horn button overlays, emblems, wheel cap overlays, etc.
Please note that
glossy black 2-plex in 1/32" thickness is no longer being
manufactured- By ANYONE! As this is one of our most used materials, we've spent
months working on a suitable replacement product. After
some extensive R&D, our alternative is clear lexan in
.030" thickness, which is sanded on one side and sprayed with several
coats of black epoxy paint. This results in a very durable 'laminated' surface,
and a finished product equal in quality to the 2-plex material.

COLORED
ALUMINUM
This is "trophy" style aluminum, about .025" thick,
and available in several colors. This is typically diamond "drag" engraved, where a non-rotating
diamond-tipped cutter merely scratches thru the colored surface, and into the aluminum beneath!
Typically used for the pullstrap screw covers, outer door handle plates, wheel cap overlays, etc. |
ANODIZED
ALUMINUM
This is aluminum sheet stock that is sanded, and then black
anodized. Typically, this
stuff is NOT glossy, instead, it has a rich semi-flat appearance. The anodizing process
also hardens the surface of aluminum. Looks very nice when engraved! 1/32" thick sheet is used for nearly everything! However,
front
license plates and ashtray switch plates are made from 1/16" thick aluminum. The shifters start
out as 1-1/4" diameter aluminum rod stock. They are cut to length and all holes are
drilled and then they are sent out to be anodized. Next they are finished and
engraved. |
PLAIN
OLD ALUMINUM
As it says! Gauge panels and
machined (non anodized) shifters, and
"engine-turned" parts start out as good old "raw" aluminum! |
